Associate Music Tutors
- Suffolk County Council – Northgate Arts Centre, Ipswich IP4 3DF - Hybrid
- £30.35 per hour

At Suffolk County Council, we believe that when our people grow, our communities thrive. That`s why we`re looking for passionate Associate Music Teachers to join our team. Here, you`ll find more than just a job – you`ll discover opportunities to develop your skills, make a meaningful impact, and reimagine what`s possible. Are you ready to grow with us and shape the future of Suffolk?
Your role and responsibilities
Associate Music Tutors are crucial roles within the County Music Service’s support for music-making in schools and the community and can function in a number of ways.
You will have the opportunity to:
- provide fun, exciting and inspirational music teaching, both face-to-face and occasionally online, to students across Suffolk
- cover contracted-staff absence (either long or short term)
- deliver new teaching, as it is required i.e. when schools buy additional teaching time from us, but all contracted staff are already timetabled elsewhere
- deliver workshops, kick-starter or other short-term projects
- act with the interests of the young musicians of Suffolk at heart
- support our ‘County Music Groups’ programme (our county-wide ensemble rehearsal programme i.e. Suffolk Youth Orchestra/Wind Orchestra/Jazz Orchestra/Young String Orchestra)
- form new ensembles within schools or our regional music centres (dependent on your musical specialisms)
- present yourself professionally at all times and treat everyone you engage with, with respect
- respect and follow the processes and protocols of Suffolk County Music Service and, by association, Suffolk County Council.
Why join the County Music Service team?
You will:
- join a vibrant, welcoming and highly experienced staff team to expand your network and draw on their skills
- have access to all SCMS training (5 full days per year in addition to all other training sessions offered incl. safeguarding; child protection; wellbeing; teaching-specific sessions etc), for which you will be paid to attend
- be part of a team that all new teaching work for the Music Service is offered to
- be able to progress professionally and broaden your teaching skills and experience. We will be happy to facilitate training and experience (unpaid) of a whole range of different teaching types including whole-class ensemble teaching (WCET); small or large group; online; all types of ensembles; foreign tours; residentials; project work with national orchestras i.e. RPO, Britten Sinfonia, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
- remain in charge of what you get involved in. As a non-contracted Associate Tutor, you are free to accept or decline any teaching offered, and your decision will not jeopardise future offers of work from the Music Service
- be allocated a dedicated line-manager to support you in any way that is needed
- be joining a progressive service that values the opinions and ideas of its workforce, thrives on collegiate working and is thoroughly invested in ensuring the children and young people of Suffolk get an accessible and inspiring musical offer.
Please take the time to view a full list of requirements in the Job and Person Profile (docx). We are particularly seeking further Woodwind, Upper String and Guitar specialists but are also interested in hearing from musicians that have specialisms in music from other countries, cultures and genres.

We are a friendly, professional and supportive team of skilled and experienced teachers (both qualified and unqualified teachers) that enjoy sharing and celebrating the successes of our students and colleagues. We believe in the power of music to be a positive influence in the lives of all young people and are passionate about sharing this message.
